Did You Know?

New faces In IT

Information Technology is pleased to announce the availability of a new email system for students! This system, called "Mail.Montclair" replaces the existing Alpha email system and offers state of the art features and flexibility to our student users.

Mail.Montclair accounts will serve as the primary point of contact for correspondence with the University. Because of this, students are strongly encouraged to check this email system often for notices from the University that may affect them.

General Information
All current MSU students are eligible for a Mail.Montclair account. This email account, which can be accessed through a web browser from any computer with an Internet connection, provides students with all typical email services including sending and receiving mail, exchanging attachments, organizing mail and even managing a mailbox. For students without MSU ISP accounts, setting up a Mail.Montclair account will automatically create enrollment in the MSU-ISP. For more information about MSU-ISP, please read the document about the MSU-ISP.

How do I create an email account?

  1. Using a web browser, go to http://mail.montclair.edu and click on the "Universal Account Form for Students"
  2. Enter your registration PIN# and Social Security number (if you do not know your PIN#, please see the FAQ at the bottom of this page)
  3. Click Login
  4. Read the MSU Guidelines for Responsible Computing
  5. Type Yes if you agree with the guidelines and click Continue
  6. Verify that your first and last names are correct. If so, click Continue
  7. On the page that appears, click the Create Account button
  8. After a few seconds (while your application is processed), your new MSU email and ISP username and password will appear (the typical
  9. Syntax for a student username is last name + first initial + a number).
  10. If you already have an MSU-ISP account, your mail.montclair password will be set to match it.

How do I access email?
Mail.Montclair is available through webmail.montclair.edu in any web browser with Internet access. When the site appears, a prompt will ask for a username and password. Enter the information for your account and the mail interface will open. For detailed instructions on using Mail.Montclair, please attend an information session (located on the Training & Events calendar) or check the documentation library (under the topic email).
For Alpha Users
This mail system replaces the portion of the Alpha system which currently supplies email services. All Alpha services (including mail) will remain as-is until the end of the fall semester. At the end of the fall semester, December 22, 2001, Alpha email will be shut down permanently. After December 22, 2001, all other Alpha services will remain the same. Alpha users are strongly encouraged to read "Transitioning from Alpha" and follow the instructions listed.

Support for email

Information sessions are available to students regarding using email
The Helpline (973-655-7971 or x7971) can answer basic questions about email
Documentation for email is available in the documentation library (choose to view documents by software or topic then click on Mail.Montclair)

Frequently Asked Questions and Notes

What is my PIN#?
Your PIN# is the PIN# that you use when you register for classes If you do not know your PIN#, please visit the registrars office in College Hall with two forms of identification to request a new password.
Can I still use Alpha email?
Yes, until December 22, 2001. On December 22, 2001, Alpha email will be permanently shut down and no records will be retrievable.
What about my Alpha account's other services?
There are no immediate plans to change anything on Alpha besides email. Web hosting, library catalog access etc. will remain the same.
I have an MSU-ISP account; will setting up a Mail.Montclair account change my username and password?
No, if you are an existing MSU-ISP user, your username and password on the MSU-ISP will be used to set your Mail.Montclair username and password. Afterwards, any changes to your password will affect both your MSU-ISP account and your Mail.Montclair account.
I don't have an MSU-ISP account; how do I get one?
By setting up a Mail.Montclair account, an MSU-ISP account will automatically be created for you. Please read the info page on MSU-ISP for important information.
I have both a Mail.Montclair account and an MSU-ISP account, but I've forgotten the password? How can I reset them?
Completing the form located at mail.montclair.edu will reset both passwords. When you complete the form a second time, you will be given an option to reset your password.
How do I move messages from Alpha to Mail.Montclair?
Please see the detailed instructions on "Transitioning from Alpha"
How do I setup auto-forwarding from Alpha to Mail.Montclair?
Please see the detailed instructions on "Transitioning from Alpha"
What is IMAP?
IMAP is a type of mail server which is designed to retain messages and user preferences on the server itself - as opposed to an individual computer.  Mail.Montclair is an IMAP server.
What is POP (POP3)?
POP is a type of mail server which is designed to have email download periodically to a local computer for storage. Although POP servers can store messages on the server, they are not designed to retain an entire mailbox of messages and user preferences. POP servers usually have a smaller storage area than IMAP servers.
