Announcement!
Information technology is pleased to announce the migration of faculty and staff email accounts to the new mail server. This mail server provides enhanced usability through a web browser interface and better performance. Migration of faculty and staff accounts will start on September 1st, 2001. After an account is migrated, there is almost no change to use through Netscape Messenger.
General Information
In order to provide better service, Information Technology is moving Mail.Montclair accounts to a new email server. This server provides additional services including a web interface, better speed and reliability and integration with the student email system.

Once your account is migrated, your email is available through two different interfaces- the traditional Netscape Communicator/Messenger interface and through the Webmail interface (which is accessed at a web address through any computer with internet access and a web browser)
How will I know if I have been migrated?
Once your Mail.Montclair account is migrated, your mailbox will have a new message in it regarding the migration.
Do I need to change anything on my Mail.Montclair account?
If you are using Netscape Communicator/Messenger to use Mail.Montclair through the traditional interface, you will need to setup your LDAP (Montclair State Directory). To do this:
In Netscape:

  1. Click on Communicator | Address Book
  2. Click on File | New Directory
  3. Under the LDAP Server Properties box, click on the General tab at the top of the screen
  4. Complete the fields as follows:
  5. Description: Mail.Montclair Directory
  6. Server: ldap.montclair.edu
  7. Search root: o=montclair.edu,dc=montclair,dc=edu
  8. Verify that there is no checkmark next to "Login with name and password"
  9. Click OK

Frequently Asked Questions

Is our address still the same? (if so, it might be nice at some point to eliminate the "mail" part, if possible)

Email address will remain the same. All faculty and staff accounts have always had an alternate email address of the form Firstname.Lastname@Montclair.edu. For example, Frank Smith actually has two email addresses associated with his account: a primary address of smithf@mail.montclair.edu and an alternate address of Frank.Smith@montclair.edu (Student accounts will NOT have the alternate Firstname.Lastname address)

If we delete a message via Webmail, is it also deleted on Netscape, or vice-versa?

Both WebMail and Netscape Communicator/Messenger are accessing the same mailbox. As a result, changes made using one interface are reflected in the other.

I use CSAM mail to get my email at home. Is that going to change with the migration to the new system?

You can still use the CSAM web interface, though the new WebMail interface has a lot of nice features that you may want to check out!

I'm an outlook user and when I first set up the account I selected the pop option. Is there a way of making this account imap?

I believe you can change an existing Outlook "account" (profile, really) from POP to IMAP. Please note that Netscape (and WebMail) are the only mail clients supported by Information Technology. For Outlook, check the Microsoft web site for documentation on how to set up an IMAP account.

Is there any quick way to delete messages in a particular folder other than by deleting them one by one (which takes forever)?

A "block" of messages can be selected by highlighting the first one in the block, then holding down the Shift key and clicking on the last one in the block. All messages in between will be highlighted and can be deleted at once. The Control key can be used to highlight multiple messages that are not in a block.
