Did You Know?

New faces In IT

What is Citrix?
Citrix is a server-based computing system that enables users to run applications and full Windows sessions in a terminal like environment where all of the processing is done on a server. Users can access applications without having them installed on their local hard drive. The applications reside on a server and can be accessed once a user is given an account. This allows users access to their applications and data files, whenever and wherever they are needed.
What purpose does Citrix serve?

There are many advantages to using Citrix for the user, as well as IT professionals:

Users can access their personal Citrix desktop settings, applications, and data files using any computer, from any location.

Older computers that could no longer handle running updated Windows-based applications can be used again regardless of their hardware or operating system. This reduces the need to continually purchase new computers.

Citrix solves the problem of transporting larger files that may not fit onto one diskette. For example, if you had a PowerPoint presentation that you were presenting at another location and that file was too large to fit on one diskette, you could save it on the Citrix server and then access the file from anywhere.

It is cost-effective to the university since the applications do not have to be installed on each computer. They reside on the Citrix server and can be accessed with an account. This reduces the amount of time necessary for computer maintenance, software deployment, and upgrades.

Who is using Citrix on campus?
Citrix is currently being used in two dormitory computer labs. Several faculty members and OIT employees are also using Citrix.

How can you get started?
Call the Computer Helpline at X7971 and request an individual account. Once your account has been established, you will receive an instruction sheet that will assist you. Internet connection is necessary.
