May 24: Demonstrating Student’s Best Practices
3 hours: 9am - 12pm
Pedagogy
Many times instructors
would like to share a student’s assignment with the rest of the class to
generate a discussion forum; unfortunately, the document is only available in
hard copy form. Using scanning technology, instructors can create an electronic
version of this document to create a best practice example to display to the
class. This model will also include instructor’s comments by embedding audio
files explaining the learning objectives achieved from this representation.
Uploading this model into Blackboard can generate a class discussion, using
various teaching techniques to generate student responses within a discussion
forum.
Applied Technology
This class will
demonstrate how to use scanning technology to convert hard copy student
assignments into digital format. Participants will verbally annotate these
scanned documents integrating audio technology with Microsoft Word. Finally,
these best practice examples will be uploaded into Blackboard to generate a
class discussion.
Technology Used:
scanner, microphones, sound recorder, Real Player, Blackboard, and Microsoft
Word.
May 25: JPEGS, GIFS, and TIFFS - Oh My!
3 hours: 9am - 12pm
Pedagogy
Using images to demonstrate complicated concepts is an
excellent learning tool; however, these images are only accessible in the
course textbook, on a website, or on your home computer’s hard drive.
Displaying images within discussion board forums, assessments, or within
online course content can enhance the learning objectives of the course;
but, the size of the file may prevent students from viewing the image
effectively. Finally, emails containing images as an attachment cannot be sent
to your students because of the size of the image file.
Applied Technology
In this workshop,
participants will take pictures using a digital camera in addition to scanning
images using a digital scanner, which will be uploaded to a computer’s hard
drive. Learners will gain a better understanding of picture properties and
discover a variety of ways to format images including alternative methods of
saving and capturing images from a website. In addition, activities will include
how to use images in assessments and discussion board forums.
Technology Used:
digital camera, software to transfer and scan images, Blackboard
May 26: View Dynamic PowerPoint
Presentations that Include Video and Voice Annotation Over the Internet or
Within Blackboard
3 hours: 9am - 12pm
Pedagogy
Slide shows are a great
tool to help explain difficult topics but can sometimes be monotonous. Adding
screen shots, images, and hyperlinks to web sites can add some pizzazz, but these tools may not make the topic clear to the viewer. Including voice
annotation and video just might do the trick.
Applied Technology
In this workshop,
participants will create a dynamic PowerPoint slideshow using screenshots,
images, and hyperlinks to enhance the content. This slideshow will be enhanced using voice and video technology integrated with Microsoft Producer and uploaded
to Blackboard or to a website.
Technology Used:
PowerPoint, Microsoft Producer, Blackboard, webcam, microphone
May 27: Office Hours From Home
3 hours: 9am - 12pm
Pedagogy
Students sometimes cannot
meet with faculty during set office hours to discuss assignments or class
content. To accommodate scheduling conflicts, instructors can meet with students
in real-time and see and hear each other using webcam technology in conjunction
with Yahoo IM. In addition, visuals of sample documents or accessing a URL is
sometimes necessary to reinforce difficult concepts. Using the Blackboard
virtual classroom, instructors can display material and access URL’s to enhance
the session.
Applied Technology
Participants will
collaborate with each other assuming the role of student and instructor using
webcam and Yahoo IM/AIM technology to simulate an office hour discussion. In
addition, activities will include using the Blackboard Virtual Classroom
demonstrating such functions as file sharing, white board functionality, and
internet access.
Technology Used:
Microphones, webcams, Blackboard, and Yahoo IM
