Writing Corner

Once a month our school will write a collective poem or story.  I will provide a topic or starting sentence for the poem or story.  Each class with my assistance will come up with a line for the poem or story.  We will continue to add lines until every class has had an opportunity to add something.  I will be displaying our collective poems and stories on this website monthly.

Poems and poetry can open the doors to reading and writing.  It is a fun way for children to explore reading and writing.  We will be reading many poems by many authors on a regular basis in library.  I encourage parents to read poems with their children as well as help them create their own poems. Your child may be a poet and you don't even know it! Have fun!

Clare stared out the window and she couldn't believe what she saw...  A bird was flying backwards into the garage.                                                                                                                                                                                                       "Oh no oh dear what should I do!" exclaimed Clare.  "I know I'll open the garage and catch it with a baseball mitt."

Clare got her mitt and opened the garage door.  The bird flew past her right into the living room.  He headed straight for the plants and began building a nest.  The bird finished the nest and carried it to Clare's bedroom.  He landed on Clare's bed with the nest and made a big mess.  Clare sneaked behind the bird and grabbed the nest away.

The bird stared at Clare and said, "Hey what are you trying to do to me?"

Clare replied, "Listen if you're going to stay here you must follow some rules."

1. Don't make a mess.

2. fly forwards not backwards.

3. Stay off my bed, I don't want holes pecked in my mattress.

4.  Keep your wings to yourself.

5. Don't get any bright ideas and invite your bird friends.

6. Stay out of the bedroom and stay in a cage.

the bird hesitated and said, "Okay but I want a big cage with a jacuzzi."

Clare looked out the window and she couldn't believe what she saw.  A crocodile was eating her house.

She ran to the phone to call Mr. Rumple the magician.

"Mr. Rumple, hi this is Clare, I have a crocodile eating my house.  Can you come over and turn him into a snowman?"

"Okay but first I need my handerkerchief and my special wand to make my snow potion."    Mr. Rumple took some ice cubes, snow, and cotton and mixed it together.  He drove to Clare's house took out his wand and said, Abracadabra, Allacazam I'll make you into a snowman.

The crocodile was eating the living room when suddenly he froze and couldn't move.  Mr. Rumple took out his snow potion and poured it on the crocodile, but something went wrong, he began to transform into a snow monster.

The snow monster grew 20 feet tall and began destroying the neighborhood.  Mr. Rumple knew he needed to melt the snow monster fast, so he cast a spell to make it extremely hot outside.  Slowly the monster began to melt causing a flood.

All the townspeople got into their bathing suits and went swimming in the streets.  They all cheered, ""Hip hip hooray for Mr. Rumple the best magician in the world."
