The Collection The Berkley Media Center has a large selection of items that relate to the curriculum and reading needs of students and teachers grades K-5. Students may only check out printed materials, whereas teachers and faculty members also have access to nonprint materials such as videos. All materials are selected according to criteria relating to the appropriateness of content and the durability. Donations of books may be accepted at a later date as we continue to update our collection. Individuals wishing to donate books or media might contact individual teachers.
Student Book Check-Outs The normal check-out period for students is one week. Most students will come to the library on a weekly scheduled basis. Students in Kindergarten and First grade are limited to one book checked out at a time. Second through Fifth graders may check out 2 books. When more than one book is checked out by a student, all books must be returned before another book may be borrowed. Overdue Books When a student has an overdue book he or she cannot check out another book from the library until the overdue book is returned. Even if the child is normally allowed to check out two books, one overdue results in no additional check outs until the overdue is returned. No fines are charged for overdue books and children will be able to reserve a book. Reserved books can be taken out once the overdue book is returned.
Lost or Damaged Books The full replacement cost will be charged for any lost materials. Until the lost book is paid for it will be treated like an overdue book. Books not returned or paid for by the end of the school year will cause your child's report card to be held by the office. If a book is damaged while checked out to a student, a charge will be made to cover the cost of repairing the book. If the book is beyond repair, it will be treated like a lost book and full replacement cost will be charged. |
