Philosophy for Children Workshop in Cape Town,
South Africa, September 2005


Cape Town from Robben Island

Professor Lena Green, University of the Western Cape, obtained a grant to invite Professor Maughn Gregory, Director of the Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children (IAPC) at Montclair State University, to give a workshop in Philosophy for Children to teachers and administrators of the Educational Management and Development Centre - Metropole South, in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town, South Africa, September 5-10, 2005.

Dr. Green is conducting a study on the effectiveness of using philosophical stories and dialogical inquiry to teach ethics as part of South Africa's new national curriculum.  During the week, Drs. Green and Gregory visited three classrooms in Mitchells Plain, where teachers participating in the workshop were practicing philosophical inquiry with their students.

 

     

     

   

 

 

When the workshop was concluded Dr. Gregory visited Robben Island, the site of the prison where Nelson Mandela and other South African political prisoners were held during aparteid.

 

 

 

The island is also home to wild springbok and a colony of African Penguins.

     

 

On his last morning in Cape Town, Dr. Gregory visited the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden.
