The "Johnny Appleseed of Philosophy" 

Returns to Montclair

The man dubbed the “Johnny Appleseed of philosophy” by Public Radio International, Christopher Phillips, will be returning to Montclair, New Jersey in March 2003 for two special events:

    Wednesday evening, March 19^th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Montclair State University’s Dickson
        Hall / Cohen Lounge, Phillips will facilitate a Community of Inquiry on the topic “Philosophical
        Communities In and Out of the Academy.”  All are welcome.

    Thursday evening, March 20^th from 6:00 to 8:00 Phillips will facilitate a “Socrates Café” for
        area parents, teachers and high school students at the Montclair High School library, located 
        on the second floor of the high school building, #100 Chestnut Street, Montclair. Street Parking.

These events are sponsored by Montclair State University's Graduate School and College of Education and Human Services, The New Jersey Network for Educational Renewal, The Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children, and The New Jersey Association for Philosophy in Schools.

Each event is worth two Professional Development Hours for New Jersey Teachers!

A graduate of MSU’s M.Ed. in Philosophy for Children, Christopher Phillips has traveled around the world, gathering people to participate in Socrates Cafés in bookstores, senior centers, elementary schools and universities, and prisons. Many of these experiences are related in his acclaimed book Socrates Café: A Fresh Taste of Philosophy (W.W. Norton & Company, 2001).  Phillips is also the author of The Philosopher’s Club (Ten Speed Press, 2001), a children’s picture book of philosophical questions and ideas.  His next book, The Six Questions of Socrates: A Fresh Taste of World Philosophy, also to be published by W.W. Norton, features dialogues Phillips has held all over the globe -- from Chiapas to Seoul to Tokyo to Athens to Manhattan to the Navajo Reservation to Mexico City.  Christopher and Cecilia Phillips are co-founders of The Society for Philosophical Inquiry, a grassroots non-profit organization with numerous affiliate groups around the country.
