Dr. Jaime Grinberg, NJNER Director 2001-3                MSU Student Center

We are very proud of the accomplishments of our colleagues in all of the NJNER settings.  At this year's NJNER Summer Conference we had the opportunity to learn more about the work that has been going on with our teacher study groups and Dodge Grant Teams, as well as the other exciting things happening in classrooms throughout the Network and in the University.  This year we also had “conversation groups” around topics of teaching organized by levels and subject areas.  In addition, was a mini-course on culturally responsive pedagogy for early childhood environments and a special session on relaxation techniques for teachers.

This year’s Summer Conference also showcased the curriculum and practices of Philosophy for Children (P4C), which is a very exciting approach to develop critical thinking skills and to engage students in conversations and inquiry about real issues that enhance ethics and character education.  Dr. Thomas Jackson from Hawaii, Dr. Christine Gehrett from Washington and Dr. Manuela Gomez from Spain were featured speakers, and lead workshops focusing on early childhood and on philosophy for adolescents.  P4C Curriculum materials were disseminated free of charge to all participants.

"Fee-la-so-fee" with Dr. Thomas Jackson, Univ. of Hawaii

"Philosophy for Adolescents" with Dr. Chris Gehrett, Univ. of Alaska

The Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children (IAPC) hosted a Philosophy for Children Open House throughout the Conference, with videos, curriculum sets, materials from P4C around the world, brochures on P4C degree programs, and refreshments.
