Sobre NAACI
Acerca
de San Cristóbal
|
About NAACI Since it’s founding in Austin, Texas in the Spring of 1994, NAACI has sought to bring together like-minded scholars and teachers to enhance educational theory and practice through Community of Inquiry, expanding the pioneering work of Matthew Lipman and others in Philosophy for Children to all interested in community of inquiry approaches to teaching and learning. About San Cristóbal de las Casas Known originally as “Jovel,” the town was taken by the Spanish in 1528 and made a regional capital, re-named “Villa Real.” It’s current name honors 16th Century Bishop Bartolomé de las Casas, a defender of the indigenous people against the Spanish colonial regime. San Cristóbal is a market town for many villages of indigenous peoples, mostly descended from the Maya, whose languages and customs are quite diverse. San Cristóbal hosts a large number of tourists, though typically not the same tourists who crowd Mexico’s beach resorts. Chiapas is Mexico's southernmost state, bordering Guatemala. Since January 1994 an indigenous organization called the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN) has waged a campaign for health care, education, land distribution, and representative government, for the state’s indigenous population, who number nearly 700,000. A ceasefire has been in effect for several years now. Chiapas also has the highest concentration of animal species in all of North America, though many are now in danger of extinction.
