Walter Omar Kohan, Professor of Education at the State University of Rio de Janeiro and researcher for the National Research Committee of Brazil, gave a lecture and led a discussion around questions such as, What is childhood?  Why do we educate? What does it mean to teach and to learn? Can education liberate?

Several University faculty, NJNER Clinical Faculty, local schoolteachers and P4C graduate students participated in the discussion.

Professor Kohan has worked at various Universities in Latin America in the areas of Philosophy of Education, Greek Philosophy, Contemporary Philosophy, and Philosophy with Children. He is author or editor of nearly 20 books and more than 50 articles in these fields, the most recent being his book: Infancia Entre Educación Y Filosofía (Childhood, Between Philosophy and Education, Portuguese and Spanish).  As conferencist he has taken part in more than 100 events throughout Latin America and in Europe. He directs projects on teacher education and academic support for students from rural villages at the State University of Rio.
