Paper # 4, Due April 19, 2000

Due to time, we are going to have to skip Suetonius' Deeds of the Deified Julius. (426-435) For your paper, I want to read this work and then compare it as historical writing to the selections you will read from Tacitus' Annals. (371-405). Discuss topics such as (1) how dramatic the history is (2) how analytic (3) how fair or how biased (that is, does the author have point to prove, a party to support? ) (4) how rhetorical is it? (5) to what extent it is concerned with history or just tells gossip? (6) how are they both characteristic of later imperial literature?

5. What were the evil qualities that eventually got him killed?

6. Many believe that Trajan is second only to Augustus as a truly great Roman emperor. List five qualities or achievements that would support this.

7. Hadrian, however, is one of the most fascinating and intellectual emperors, as well as a restless soul. What qualities make historians think of him this way?
