| Make sure, if given a drawing of a later Roman structure or complex, that you can point out innovations, such a curved walls, split pediments, complex domes, etc. Likewise if I give you picture of a sculpture, be able to describe its most important features and to comment upon its style. Know how sculpture and drawing generally simplifies and becomes less realistic in late antiquity, as seen in the sculptures of the tetrarchs, the massive statue of Constantine, the original work on his Arch, the sculpture of the reign of Theodosius. Know how the later basilicas created model for many early Christian Churches. Know how major cities of the provinces manifested this sophisticated architecture. Make sure you can name at least five types of Roman structures found in these centers. Know are the art (especially the portraits of the emperors) reflected the militarization of society. | |
| Know how in the 2nd century there was a revival of Greek literature (the 2nd Sophistic) that was based on the reproduction of Classic Greek and also on rhetoric, with many of the writers not even native Greeks, and how later antique pagan literature tended toward an even more tired and overdone recycling of old themes, and the innovations the Christian writers brought. Know the different attitudes to sin and this world Christianity introduced. Know how the Church benefited from the more advanced society and political models and organizational structures of the Empire it was born in. Know also about the importance of Roman law and its codification. | |
